Chapter 4

Getting ready for the future

Change is the law of life. The leaders who refuse to develop are not standing still — they are quietly falling behind.

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

— John F. Kennedy

Sustainability is the umbrella word for securing the future of our planet — and of every organisation in it. By 2025 ESG reporting will be mandatory for Dutch listed companies; by 2030 every UN member state has signed up. The question is no longer whether to act, but which capacities you and your team need to act well — outwardly on goals, inwardly on yourselves.

Future-focused skills

Adaptability and flexibility, collaboration and communication, complexity awareness, intercultural competence — these are not soft skills. They are the skills that decide whether strategy survives contact with reality.

Layered on top: regular self-reflection, so you stay attuned to the needs of your team and the world around you. Refresh the muscles of matrix management, stakeholder management and accountable leadership often; they fade fast under pressure.

The changing context

Online leadership development is cost-efficient and surprisingly powerful — but only when people share enough common ground to use it well. The leader's job is to keep that common ground alive: rituals, repeated language, shared experiences that hold a distributed team together.

In a world where the context never stops shifting, the leaders who win are not the ones who predict it best. They are the ones who learn fastest and re-orient calmly.

From SDGs to IDGs

In 2015 the UN introduced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for focus and changing habits. Companies pick the goals that align with their vision and mission, and increasingly report on ESG progress as a matter of compliance rather than goodwill.

But outer goals demand inner capacity. The Inner Development Goals framework, an open-source companion to the SDGs, organises that inner work into five dimensions — Being, Thinking, Relating, Collaborating, Acting — and twenty-three skills underneath them. The driving sentence: move what matters.

Outer change without inner growth is not sustainable. The IDGs are the missing piece in most strategy conversations.

Strong and bold — compassionate leadership

The book leans on Jacinda Ardern's example to demolish the idea that "soft" cannot be bold and strong. Compassionate leadership is the ability to do hard things in a human way — to take onboard criticism, filter it, and stay rooted in why you lead.

"The world does not need a whole lot of massively thick-skinned politicians; they do need people who care." — Jacinda Ardern

The same goes for business leaders. Trade-offs are real. Decisions cost real people. We are all human — and our teams need leaders who remember that.

The future is now

Leadership development is not a programme with a course list and a toolkit. It is a deliberate, intentional journey — connecting strategic direction to vision, then to consistent steps in implementation, execution and communication.

The shared stories you create along the way are what carry the change. They are what stakeholders tell each other when the slide deck has long been forgotten. The future is now. Start telling the next story.

Reflection

Take this into your week.

  • →Which future-focused skill is my team most short of right now?
  • →Which IDG dimension am I personally avoiding — and why?
  • →Where do I confuse 'busy doing' with 'inner growth'?
  • →What would my organisation choose differently if it took the IDGs as seriously as the SDGs?
  • →What story am I telling about the future — and who is hearing it?
